Basti: A Powerful Ayurvedic Colon Cleansing Therapy

Basti is a renowned Ayurvedic procedure that involves the administration of medicated enemas. Basti is one amongst five primary treatments included in Panchakarma, a traditional Ayurvedic cleansing regimen.

It is believed to address a broad spectrum of health issues, from top to bottom. This treatment involves the rectal administration of medicated enemas to remove toxins.

Basti is often referred to as the "Ardha-chikitsa" which means half treatment of any particular disease due to its exceptional effectiveness in addressing Vata-related disorders.

"Basti karma targets the lower gastrointestinal tract, the main site of Vata dosha, making enema beneficial for treating vitiated Vata. (Ashtang Hrudaya Sutrasthana 19/1) ". 

Types of Basti:

  • Anuvasana Basti: Oil-based enema, primarily used for Vata-dominated conditions.
  • Asthapan / Niruha Basti: Decoction-based enema, effective for both Vata and Pitta imbalances.
