Virechana (therapeutic purgation/ induced loosemotions) is one major procedures among Panchakarma Treatments.
It is a purificatory or a detox method which eliminate excess Pitta from the body. For the first few (3-7) days patient has to take medicated ghee. This process of taking ghrita (medicated ghee) is called Snehapana.
After 3-7 days of Snehapana, patient undergoes abhyanga (medicated oil massage) and swedana (steam bath) for 2-3 days. After analysing doshas and patients condition, different medicines, are given to induce purgation/virechan.
Virechan is performed by administering Virechak Aushadhi (purgative medicine) in milk or lukewarm water. And a strict diet is maintained (as prescribed by the Doctor). It takes 7-15 days to complete this procedure.

How many days does Virechana require?

Can females take Virechana during periods?
No, it is not advised to take Virechana during periods. Once your periods gets over, then one can start the treatment.
Is it advisable to sleep during the day & stay awake at night while undergoing Virechana ?
It's important to avoid sleeping during the day while undergoing Virechana. Daytime sleep can hinder digestion and prevent the ghee from working effectively, thus creating more problem and indigestion. One can sleep at night, ideally by 9-10 PM.
